The Estate
La Casa de Rojas is a part of the estate of El Castañar, one of the most important private estates in Spain. Its over 16,000 acres have been part of the Finat family heritage for generations.
Numerous counts, dukes, kings and other royal families have ventured through it’s territories along history during hunting season.
El Castañar is surrounded by history and tradition. It is one of the few lands that has a personal chapel shaped in gothic cathedral style. It was built in the 1800’s by order of the Count of Finat in order to be able to attend daily mass.
The Main House is a palace of Scottish inspiration built in 1904 by the Count of Mayalde in order to receive His Majesty the king Alfonso XIII for a hunting weekend. It still remains as the family residence, where the Dukes of Pastrana actually live and where their children and grandchildren were brought up.
The guests’ residence is the most ancient building on the property. It is known that the writer Francisco de Rojas stayed on its premises for several months in search of inspiration during what is known as the the Golden Century of Spanish Literature. In his honor the building was named La Casa de Rojas, which translates to “The House of Rojas”.
El Castañar is a fertile land, that produces its own olive oil, cheese, Iberian ham, eggs, wines and more.
